The research area tackles the role of spatial realms now including mass user applications and investigates how behaviour in real worlds is reflected in virtual worlds and vice versa. We work interdisciplinary and investigate values, terms, concepts and assumptions governed by a certain set of rules and categories guiding the pursuit of knowledge.
We aim to ‘sense” a variety of environmental, human and societal phenomena. Next to traditional GIS and remote sensing data, the group analyses data from geo-sensor networks, social media channels, mobile phone networks, or the ‘quantified self’ movement. We therefore explore quantities, qualities and dynamics of environmental and societal phenomena in new spatial and temporal detail, thus opening novel research opportunities across disciplines.
