EO-based information services in support of humanitarian operations (2012 – 2015)

Service Population Estimation
Based on semi-automated object-based image analysis of VHSR optical imagery, up-to-date information on the amount and type of different dwelling structures in refugee/IDP camps, and their spatial distribution are provided. This information enables an estimation of the camp population at a given average occupancy rate of dwellings. In addition, the calculated dwelling density (dwellings/km²) provides an overview on the distribution of dwellings. Based on dwelling density, the camp extent can be derived automatically. The service is also capable of a regular monitoring and retrospective assessment of the camp evolution.

Service Groundwater Exploration
Based on HR optical imagery and DEM data geological relevant structures (lineaments) are interpreted. Lineament (linear features recognized from satellite imagery) orientations are similar to orientations of joints measured in the field and to regional structural trends controlled or influenced by geological structure. Joints may provide zones of weakness in hard rocks and consolidated sediments, along which surface drainage might develop preferentially. In particular, intersections provide potential sites for downward percolation of water, possibly enhancing groundwater storage.
Together with additional information (e.g. geological map, hydrogeological map) indications for potential groundwater borehole sites can be provided. To further prove the suitability of the selected sites, an integrated analysis of additional auxiliary data is required, such as information on existing boreholes (in particular tested yield, depth), detailed geological and hydro-geological mapping, etc. Before siting boreholes a ground follow-up survey (e.g. geophysics) is strongly recommended.
